The White Paper Policy development process for Namibia has had an exciting start with a series of visioning workshops in the four coastal regions of Erongo, Kunene, Karas and Hardap at the end of last year. Communities were provided with a platform during these consultative workshops to express their views and concerns about the future utilization and conservation of the natural resources of the Namibian coast. Input into the White Paper process was extensive, and Namibians from different segments of the society gave input into formulating their long-term visions i.e. views how they want to see their coast and wants its values and opportunities being used in the future. Participants included users of the coastal areas such as tour operators, tourism service providers and local community members.
The Namibia Coastal White Paper General Facilitation Team of the Namibian Coast Conservation and Management (NACOMA) Project is now starting the second and final round of workshops to get more inputs. It is particularly important that your ministry’s presentation is visible in the upcoming workshops. A common vision as well as a policy will guide how the conservation, sustainable use and the mainstreaming of biodiversity in Namibia’s coastal and marine ecosystems should be promoted in future. The vision will express the national agreement on how Namibians view their coast and how its values should be developed over the medium to long term. This is a very important Government process and lack of input from your institution will weaken the process.
The workshops starts on the 5th of March 2008 in Erongo Region. We urge all who are interested to attend and participate. Below are the dates, times and venues for the various areas. For further enquiries or if you would like to express your views directly to the team you can email romie@ecoafrica.co.za.
