This is to thank DLIST on behalf of Friends of DST for the educational DVDs. Of the 10 days showing: about 80 to 100 people viewed the documentaries.
Commentaries were as follows:
Vanishing Waters a very sobering documentary, as well as Future of Food; people enjoyed the scenic viewing of BARAKA. The BCLME they found interesting seeing it is off our coast as well as A World Without Water. A Last Glimpse also had an effect on how quickly change happens.
I found EARTHSKIN most informative and relevant to the area. I believe it should be shown at Hondeklip Bay, Kleinzee, Port Nolloth, Vaalpit and all the relevant towns who shall be exposed in the not too distant future to Nuclear Power Stations. I found the video a good wake-up call to Civil Society as if we are not informed about nuclear stations by watching documentaries such as these how on earth shall the people be informed?? Informed is forewarned.
I have been in contact with the Director of Buried in Earthskin, Helena and we hope to organise transport for the residents of Vaalpit to travel to Kamieskroon to view the DVD as they have no electricity where most of the documentary was filmed.
The environment group LEEG of Lamberts Bay did a sterling job with the videos. They ran them at the Bird Island Conference centre on the island for three days, charging a small cover fee and for those visiting the Bird Island it was free. Of the documentaries their top three was The Future of Food, Buried in Earthskin and the Gathering: Return of the Whale Dreamers (that seems to capture artistic minded people and possible it resonates with us due to all the whales up here). There was no negative feedback most people found they needed more time I have to commend Gerrit Burger of LEEG for all his organising in Lamberts Bay. The Lambert Bay Primere Skool also watched two videos per day they found the videos regarding water very disturbing though educational.
The downside is the community halls do not have TV and DVD machines so that needs to be arranged.
Also when you leave this festival in the hands of the smaller communities it does not reach all the people than if you had a roadshow where someone came and showed the festival for three days in each town. One could also use the local radio stations to promote viewing. We had the videos during exam time so the majority of schools were not interested as well as the Rittelfees overshadowed more of a following to watch the DVDs in the Vredendal area.
On the whole it was a great experience and the TOP TWO by vote was FUTURE OF FOOD AND BURIED IN EARTHSKIN. Thank you for all the effort DLIST put into making these educational DVDS available.
